Interesting article.

I think that graphic actually understates the impact of increased natural gas on lowering carbon emissions. Solar and wind are typically in addition to fossil fuels not instead of, particularly coal which is the big carbon emitter. Without batteries it is virtually impossible and the largest utility-scale battery in the US is only big enough to store electricity to replace a large coal plant for a few hours.

Plus coal plants are typically in the eastern half of the US where there are few wind and solar resources compared to the Western US.

I actually have found no evidence that a single decommissioned coal plant in the US was was fully replaced by electricity from wind and solar.
